Anyone functioning as an adult will face numerous responsibilities every day, some light and some challenging. It takes a great deal of energy, clarity and good decision making to meet these responsibilities, all of which require good mental health in order to arrive at. This means that those who struggle with mental health problems are much less capable of meeting their responsibilities. People who do not have mental health problems have a hard time understanding why those with mental health problems are less functional than they are. It is because mental health problems consume time, energy and resources that in turn become unavailable to life responsibilities.

People who have good mental health are like a well maintained automobile. Their mental processes are tuned, cared for and reliable, so they tend to perform better and faster. Good mental health is an indication of a sound psychological upbringing and a secure psyche. Someone with good mental health has a lifelong practice of caring for their mental health. They were not presented with more than a normal amount of adversity in life, and if they were, they were properly equipped to deal with them. People with good mental health have had to expend far less energy on their thought and behavior patterns, where as people with poor mental health go through life having to expend energy on correcting their thought and behavior patterns. This gives those with good mental health a significant advantage when it comes to executing their responsibilities.

The difficulty in meeting responsibilities for people with poor mental health is significant. People with poor mental health have challenges that others do not. Mental problems cause destructive behavior and thought patterns. They cause self esteem reducing negative self talk. They cause inabilities to manage and organize information. If you consider what it takes to manage complex responsibilities and add these hardships on top of them, you can begin to understand why people with mental health problems can come off as low functioning.
